About Us

Mission Statement

To raise Red and Black Simmental Cattle for the purebred and commerical cattleman that function and excel in our Canadian climate  and abroad on traditional diets of forages and grasses.

Our Motto

Calve Easy, Grow Rapidly, Mature Moderately, Keep Easy, Handle Gently, & Live Long!

Our Program

We predominately breed our cows to calve in February and March.  Because we do not have a big grain land base our cows are designed to survive on a more roughage diet of forages, grasses and straw in the winter and maintain a good body score.  Our goal is to have our cows feed themselves as long as our weather patterns will allow.  Turned out to pastures in mid to late May and returned home in October.  They can graze on forage ground into November and some years into December if the deep snow stays away.

Heifer calves are backgrounded on a roughage diet program over the winter and bull calves are placed on program designed grow and mature more naturally to be ready to breed as yearlings.

A Little bit about who we are!

I am Craig Davidson along with my wife, Karla, and our two children, Ava, and Hudson own and operate BlackSand Cattle Company.  BlackSand Cattle Company originated out of my parents herd of commerical and purebred cattle.  Ralph and Wendy Davidson own and operate Sandy Acres Simmental and have done so for over 35 years.  My parents live and farm on the Davidson homestead that was 123 years in 2009.  Their original farm consisted of predominately dairy, grain and some beef cattle (Herford base) and over the years worked mainly into a beef operation.  In the early 1990's when the dairy business was sold and the beef cattle became the main focus, Simmental was choosen as the breed to build the genetic base around.  Tranditional Simmentals were the base of the herd with many bulls purchased from Woodsong Farms. In the late 1990's Red Factor  Simmental were introduced when we purchased our first Red Simmental from Lewis Farms in Alberta.   The two Farm names run and work in parallel today but BlackSand Cattle Company houses all the papered animals and follows the guidlines of the "Total Herd Enrollment" through the CSA.
